Job Summary
Medical Support Assistant provides front-desk and administrative support at a VA clinic: scheduling patient appointments and consults, entering no-show information, preparing for visits, and monitoring appointments; provides general ROI reception support; scans insurance cards and records into EMR; handles phone calls; reviews travel reimbursement requests and ambulance claims; assists in arranging transportation for eligible patients; requires proficiency in English, typing 40-50 wpm, familiarity with medical terminology, and ability to work with computer systems; must be able to pass NACI background check and comply with VA policies; on-site role at Chesapeake, VA with potential rotational weekend coverage.
Required Qualifications
- Citizen of the United States of America
- Ability to speak clearly, hear and write English
- Type 40-50 wpm with minimum errors
- Heavy phone and computer usage, often simultaneously
- Familiarity with medical terminology, hospital terminology and/or clinics
- Technically proficient in the skills necessary to fulfill the government's requirements; training provided by SFVAHS on appointment management, VA policy and procedures
- Six months experience of clerical, office, customer service, or other administrative work; or one year of education above high school; or equivalent combination
- Ability to pass a required level of security clearance (NACI-level background check)
