Job Summary
Conduct or support laboratory testing to aid in diagnosis and treatment of disease, ensuring proficiency and accuracy in all aspects of laboratory testing. Perform and report test results for waived, moderate, and high complexity clinical laboratory procedures as assigned, while verifying patient, specimen, and result identification. Operate computerized laboratory data systems, monitor Quality Control and Quality Management, and investigate variances or equipment malfunctions. Troubleshoot technical problems, document maintenance checks, and manage supply/reagent inventory to ensure adequate resources. Communicate critical values to the healthcare team, educate customers and new staff, and comply with governmental and accrediting agency standards. Complete competency assessments and perform other duties as assigned.
Required Qualifications
- Bachelor's degree in chemical, biological, clinical or medical laboratory science or medical technology from an accredited institution
- Associate degree with MT(HEW) certification or current Categorical (ASCP) (formerly NCA)
- Bachelor's degree with 60 semester hours from an accredited institution that, at a minimum, includes either 24 semester hours of medical laboratory technology courses, OR 24 semester hours of science courses that include six semester hours of chemistry, six semester hours of biology, and 12 semester hours of chemistry, biology or medical laboratory technology in any combination
- Laboratory training including either completion of a clinical laboratory training program approved or accredited by the Accrediting Bureau of Health Education Schools (ABHES) or the Commission on Accreditation of Allied Health Education Programs (CAAHEP)
- At least three months documented laboratory training in each specialty in which the individual performs high complexity testing
- Meets the training and experience requirements defined within Clinical Laboratory Improvement Amendments (CLIA) regulations, 2023 (Dec 28): [42CFR493.1423], [42CFR493.1489]
- Foreign degree deemed acceptable following evaluation as outlined by The College of American Pathologists (CAP)
- Mastery of medical technology principles, concepts and methods as evidenced by successful completion of one of the following: MT (ASCP), MLS (ASCP)cm, Categorical (ASCP), Categorical (ASCP)cm, MT (AMT), MLS (ASCPi) or Categorical (ASCPi)
- A current State Licensure at the Medical Technologist level
- State Medical Technologist license (Required for team members working in Tennessee)
- Ability to prioritize tasks appropriately
- Computer skills
