Job Summary

Analyze and interpret laboratory results using independent technical judgment while performing, evaluating, and validating the accuracy of complex laboratory procedures. Monitor quality control systems, troubleshoot instrument malfunctions, and maintain equipment through calibration and preventive maintenance. Resolve deviations in test performance by applying scientific principles to correct problems and document corrective actions. Communicate with healthcare teams and answer inquiries regarding test results, methodology, and follow-up procedures. Recognize deviations from expected results and suggest appropriate test selections. This role supports the Central Texas Veterans Health Care System in Temple, Texas.

Required Qualifications

  • 2-year Associates in Applied Science Degree
  • minimum of two (2) years of laboratory experience
  • American Society of Clinical Pathology (ASCP), or American Medical Technologists (AMT) certified as a Medical Laboratory Technician/Clinical Laboratory Technician
  • comprehensive knowledge of professional Medical Laboratory Technician principles, practices, concepts, and theories
  • comprehensive knowledge of laboratory quality control, quality assurance procedures, and principles of performance improvement
  • independent technical judgment to analyze and interpret laboratory results
  • ability to interpret and apply complex written instructions
  • basic knowledge of laboratory equipment and ability to maintain, troubleshoot, and repair instrumentation
  • ability to communicate, consult, and interact with other members of the healthcare team, external relations, customer service, and patient education
  • ability to recognize deviation from expected results and use scientific principles to analyze and correct problems
  • ability to evaluate and solve problems related to collection and processing of biological specimens
  • ability to maintain and document the optimal functioning of laboratory equipment
  • ability to troubleshoot issues with laboratory instruments and resolve problems
  • ability to identify discrepancies, solve problems, and present solutions
  • ability to answer inquiries regarding test results, methodology, test specificity, test sensitivity, and specific factors that influence test results
  • ability to meet all acceptable quality and productivity standards as defined by Chief, P&LMS or designee
