Job Summary
A Medical Laboratory Scientist II in the Microbiology Laboratory is responsible for processing, evaluating and performing tests to identify microorganisms or antigens according to written procedures and performs susceptibilities in the Microbiology Laboratory. Organizes and prioritizes workload, works independently, demonstrates technical expertise on various Microbiology processes, and makes critical decisions about results, QC and maintenance issues. Operates equipment (e.g., Cepheid Infinity, bioMerieux Vitek, Vitek 2, Microscan, BacT/ALERT, BioFire, Torch, Diasorin MDX) and contributes to QC; may perform blood parasite analysis and other duties as assigned to support the supervisor. Requires adherence to regulatory requirements and safe work practices. Salary is commensurate with education and experience. Pre-employment screening and background checks are required.
Required Qualifications
- Bachelor of Science Degree in Medical Laboratory Sciences, Medical Technology, Biology, Chemistry, or related discipline.
- 2 years of Clinical Laboratory experience.
- ASCP or equivalent certification in Medical Laboratory Scientist (MLS), Medical Technologist (MT) or Microbiology (M)
Desired Qualifications
- Bachelor of Science Degree in Medical Laboratory Sciences or Medical Technology
- ASCP or equivalent certification in Medical Laboratory Scientist (MLS), Medical Technologist (MT) or Microbiology (M)
- Ability to answer advanced questions about Microbiology from clinicians
- Able to perform blood parasite analysis
- Knowledge of UAMS testing methods and ability to operate all equipment in the UAMS Microbiology department
- Experience in Microbiology testing and QC processes
- Strong problem solving skills
- Ability to organize and prioritize workload
- Ability to work independently and make critical decisions about results, QC and maintenance issues
