Job Summary
Medical Laboratory Assistant (MLA) in the Pathology and Laboratory Medicine department supports pre- and post-analytical testing, including specimen procurement/receipt/processing, data entry, media/reagent/smear preparation, sterilization, clerical duties, and loading specimens on analyzers. Responsibilities may include supply management, troubleshooting, and customer service. Positive patient identification and accurate specimen handling are essential. Work may involve rotating shifts, weekends, and/or holidays and may include off-site work (LTC facilities, communities, or private homes) depending on operational needs. Adherence to NSH/PLM policies and infection prevention controls is required. Must be able to work independently with good judgment and maintain professional appearance; CSMLS CAMPLR/NSRMLS licensure and MLA program completion are required. Strong communication, attention to detail, manual dexterity, and basic computer skills (Meditech preferred) are essential. Travel may be required; bilingual French is an asset.
Required Qualifications
- Recognized Medical Laboratory Assistant Program or equivalent (as determined by NSRMLS)
- CSMLS CAMPLR registration and current CSMLS registration
- Licensure with Nova Scotia Regulator of Medical Laboratory Sciences (NSRMLS)
- Strong written and verbal communication skills
- Basic understanding of medical terminology
- Strong attention to detail
- Manual dexterity to handle sharp instruments and small objects
- Ability to perform procedures with accuracy
- Ability to number/label specimens and file slides/requisitions
- Basic computer skills, Meditech experience preferred
- Access to reliable transportation; travel may be required
- Competencies in other languages an asset, French preferred
