Job Summary
Provide accurate verbal and written interpretation and translation for non-English speaking patients and families across the facility, ensuring neutrality and confidentiality while addressing cultural influences on care. Render complete interpretations without altering meaning, assist with consent forms and unit forms, and coordinate appointments for identified foreign language speakers. Support patient advocacy by offering information, general assistance, and referrals to resources, while escalating high-risk incidents to management. Perform data entry, documentation, and computer activities as necessary, and participate in staff orientation and training. Maintain HIPAA compliance and respect patient privacy and modesty during interactions.
Required Qualifications
- 40-hour Medical Interpretation Certificate, approved at NGHS - Obtained within 4 months of hire date
- High School Diploma or GED
- One (1) year customer service-related experience
- Must be bi-lingual in both English and an identified foreign language (Spanish)
- Fluent oral/written communication skills in English and an identified foreign language (Spanish)
- Ability to communicate effectively with patients/families, other healthcare staff, and external providers of service
- Ability to handle complex, timely, and confidential information with discretion
- Ability to prioritize tasks in order to deliver high quality work, with minimal supervision, against tight time deadlines
- Ability to work confidentially and sensitively
- Demonstrate proficiency with computers and computer software
- Ability to work effectively cross-culturally
- Must be able to adjust and work efficiently in a fast-paced, stressful environment
- Adequate capacity to perform duties with a culturally and socially diverse patient population
