Job Summary
Medical Director - Hospice role responsible for overall medical direction of hospice patient care and guidance to the hospice team, with physician leadership across care, documentation, and program quality. Core duties include ensuring terminal prognosis evaluation and certifications, overseeing initial and comprehensive care plans, maintaining documentation quality, participating in quality improvement and ethics committees, providing medical expertise in pain and symptom management, educating physicians and staff, engaging in staff hires/credentialing, maintaining on-call coverage 24/7, budgeting and strategic planning, responding to audits/denials, credentialing processes, and community education. Requirements include MD license in the operating state, board certification in a relevant specialty with palliative medicine expertise, working knowledge of oncology and palliative care, collaboration with attending physicians and an interdisciplinary team, and current medical staff credentialing and malpractice insurance.
Required Qualifications
- License to practice medicine in the state in which the program is operating
- Board certification in a medical specialty that deals with care of the terminally ill (e.g., Internal Medicine, Oncology or Family Practice) with working knowledge of medical oncology and palliative medicine
- Knowledge of primary medical care and palliative care
- Ability to work collaboratively with patients' attending physicians, hospice employees and volunteers as part of an interdisciplinary team
- Membership in good standing on the medical staff of an accredited hospital in the state of operation
- Medical malpractice and liability insurance satisfactory to VITAS
- Positive recommendation to the general manager or area vice president from corporate medical officer
