Job Summary
Welcome patients, verify identities using two approved identifiers, and collect blood, urine, or respiratory specimens with documented training. Measure vital signs, prepare patients for procedures, and immediately notify clinical staff of any adverse reactions or emergencies. Label specimens in the patient's presence, process, store, and transport samples according to manufacturer instructions and chain-of-custody requirements. Enter accurate data into the laboratory information system, maintain quality-control logs, and protect patient information in compliance with HIPAA. Answer telephone calls, coordinate with healthcare providers, and follow infection-control protocols including proper PPE use and sharps disposal.
Required Qualifications
- High school diploma or equivalent
- Completed a Medical Assistant, Phlebotomy Technician, Patient Care Technician, or comparable healthcare-training program
- Current CPR and Basic Life Support certification
- Competency in specimen collection, patient identification, specimen labeling, infection prevention, documentation, and laboratory safety
- Effective oral and written communication skills
- Ability to use electronic health records, laboratory information systems, email, scanners, printers, and standard office equipment
- Attention to detail and the ability to follow written laboratory procedures
- Ability to maintain patient confidentiality and professional boundaries
- Legal authorization to provide services in the United States
- Successful completion of required background screening, exclusion screening, credential verification, and other onboarding requirements
- Accurate patient identification

- Ability to wear required personal protective equipment
- Ability to respond appropriately to spills, exposures, fainting, patient distress, and other laboratory incidents
- Ability to protect all patient, employee, business, financial, operational, and clinical information
Desired Qualifications
- Current Certified Medical Assistant, Registered Medical Assistant, Certified Clinical Medical Assistant, or equivalent certification
- Current phlebotomy certification
- At least one year of experience in a physician's office, diagnostic laboratory, urgent-care center, behavioral-health organization, or outpatient healthcare setting
- Experience collecting blood, urine, respiratory, toxicology, or other diagnostic specimens
- Experience with electronic health records or laboratory information systems
- Knowledge of HIPAA, OSHA bloodborne-pathogen requirements, infection prevention, and laboratory quality-control practices
- Bilingual communication skills
