Job Summary
Greets patients, escorts them to examination rooms, and takes vital signs while updating patient history, allergies, and immunizations in the electronic medical record. Prepares patients for exams and procedures, removes dressings and staples, performs point-of-care lab testing, and obtains signed consents or ABN forms as needed. Schedules and manages appointments, verifies insurance eligibility, collects co-pays, and processes payments through Emdeon. Reviews charts for pending lab results, completes physician orders for ancillary tests and referrals, and retrieves messages from answering services. Cleans and scrubs rooms nightly, prepares non-disposable equipment for sterilization, maintains medication inventory, and adheres to OSHA and confidentiality guidelines.
Required Qualifications
- Completion of accredited medical assistant program
- At least two years of experience
- Current CPR certification
- Basic medical front and back office procedures
- Medical terminology
- First aid measures
- Knowledge of equipment, supplies and instruments used in a medical office
- Knowledge of simple routine clinical laboratory methods
- Knowledge of universal blood and body fluid precautions
- Knowledge of OSHA rules and regulations
- Knowledge of established protocol for storing poisons, narcotics, acids, caustics and flammable items
- Knowledge of restrictions imposed by various managed care carriers
- Knowledge of various forms inherent to profession
- Knowledge of patient confidentiality regulations
- Knowledge of usage of computer systems
- Knowledge of insurance authorizations
- Knowledge of referrals
- Knowledge of billing processes
- Ability to establish and maintain cooperative relationships with staff members
- Ability to create a responsive caring environment for patients
- Ability to respond promptly to physician's directions
- Ability to maintain medical records in a concise and accurate manner
- Ability to employ correct aseptic techniques in preparation of instruments & equipment
- Ability to react quickly in emergency situations
- Ability to recognize and prevent possible safety hazards
- Ability to ensure proper maintenance of equipment
- Ability to communicate clearly and facilitate patient education when warranted
- Ability to act as advocate and assist physician in meeting the physical and mental needs of patient
- Ability to exercise independent judgment
- Ability to perform functions that consistently fall within the legal boundaries of profession
