Job Summary

Greet patients, escort them to examination rooms, and take vital signs while updating patient history, allergies, medications, and immunizations in the electronic medical record. Remove dressings and staples, prepare patients for procedures, and perform point-of-care lab testing as ordered by the provider. Schedule appointments, verify insurance eligibility, collect co-pays, and process payments through Emdeon, ensuring accurate charge entry and daily deposit preparation. Retrieve messages, answer telephone inquiries within three rings, and screen calls to the appropriate party. Maintain clinical and back-office inventory, manage refrigerator temperatures, and clean rooms and instruments nightly. Review charts for pending results, obtain authorizations, and travel to other IHPS offices when requested to cover clinical or clerical duties.

Required Qualifications

  • Completion of accredited medical assistant program
  • Current CPR certification
  • Basic medical front and back office procedures
  • Medical terminology
  • First aid measures
  • Knowledge of equipment, supplies and instruments used in a medical office
  • Knowledge of simple routine clinical laboratory methods
  • Knowledge of universal blood and body fluid precautions
  • Knowledge of OSHA rules and regulations
  • Knowledge of established protocol for storing poisons, narcotics, acids, caustics and flammable items
  • Knowledge of restrictions imposed by various managed care carriers
  • Knowledge of various forms inherent to profession
  • Knowledge of patient confidentiality regulations
  • Knowledge of usage of computer systems
  • Knowledge of insurance authorizations
  • Knowledge of referrals
  • Knowledge of billing processes
  • Ability to establish and maintain cooperative relationships with staff members
  • Ability to create a responsive caring environment for patients
  • Ability to respond promptly to physician's directions
  • Ability to maintain medical records in a concise and accurate manner
  • Ability to employ correct aseptic techniques in preparation of instruments & equipment
  • Ability to react quickly in emergency situations
  • Ability to recognize and prevent possible safety hazards
  • Ability to ensure proper maintenance of equipment
  • Ability to communicate clearly and facilitate patient education when warranted
  • Ability to act as advocate and assist physician in meeting the physical and mental needs of patient
  • Ability to exercise independent judgment
  • Ability to perform functions that consistently fall within the legal boundaries of profession
  • At least two years of experience
  • Ability to travel to other IHPS offices when needed to cover clinical/clerical when requested
