Job Summary
Prepare patients for examination and treatment, taking histories and vital signs while managing exam rooms and sterilizing equipment. Assist physicians with minor surgeries, physicals, and procedures, including EKGs, Pap smears, and cultures. Schedule tests, X-rays, and appointments, screen telephone calls, and order clinical supplies. Maintain patient files, records, and specimen storage, ensuring quality assurance and confidentiality. Work under direction of Staff LPN or RN in a clinic or hospital environment, handling physical demands such as lifting up to 40 pounds and standing for extended periods.
Required Qualifications
- High school diploma or equivalent
- Graduate of an accredited Medical Assisting Program
- Previous Medical Office experience
- Knowledge of medical practice and care to assist in giving patient care
- Knowledge of examination, diagnostic, and treatment room procedures
- Knowledge of medical equipment and instruments to administer patient care
- Knowledge of common safety hazards and precautions to establish a safe work environment
- Skill in assisting in a variety of treatments as directed
- Skill in taking vital signs
- Skill in maintaining records and recording test results
- Skill in developing and maintaining department quality assurance
- Skill in establishing and maintaining effective working relationships with patients, medical staff, and the public
- Ability to maintain quality control standards
- Ability to react calmly and effectively in emergency situations
- Ability to interpret, adapt, and apply guidelines and procedures
- Ability to work with computers
- Ability to communicate clearly
- Ability to maintain confidentiality
- Ability to be a team player
- Requires full range of body motion including handling and lifting patients, manual and finger dexterity, and eye-hand coordination
- Requires standing and walking for extensive periods of time
- Occasionally lifts and carries items weighing up to 40 pounds
- Requires corrected near and far vision and hearing to normal ranges
- Requires working under stressful conditions or working irregular hours
- Potential exposure to communicable diseases or potentially infected bodily fluids
- Frequent exposure to communicable diseases, toxic substances, medicinal preparations and other conditions common to a clinic environment
- May be called upon to assist physician at hospital or outside facility
- Public environment
- Bloodborne area
Desired Qualifications
- Certification or registration as medical assistant (Preferred)
