Job Summary
Medical Assistant Apprentice in a 12-month registered apprenticeship at Sea Mar Community Health Centers (FQHC) preparing to take the CCMA exam. The program is WA State-approved, co-governed by an equal-organization/MA representative committee, and delivers 2000 hours of paid on-the-job training plus 364 hours of supplemental coursework, including two online courses, three in-person lab days, and hands-on practice. The MA Apprentice will work as a central member of the patient care team, assist with immunizations, charting, referrals, patient rooming, and coordination of care, and support quality measures (HEDIS/UDS). Responsibilities include documenting clinical measures, coordinating referrals, ensuring timely patient visits, maintaining EHR documentation, supporting care team activities, and upholding clinic policies and procedures. The role emphasizes teamwork, patient-centered care, cultural awareness, adherence to regulatory requirements, and ongoing learning to achieve MA-C certification. Training may involve travel to other Sea Mar sites and potential costs associated with the apprenticeship, with wage progression through the program and supervision by a coach.
Required Qualifications
- Proficient in reading, writing and speaking English.
- High school education or equivalent.
- At least 18 years of age.
- Able to perform MA Apprentice duties at highest scope.
- Able to provide proof of 7.0 HIV/AIDS training from WA State DOH-approved training provider.
- Able to provide proof of up-to-date First Aid and CPR training.
- Have the time and resources to devote to the online coursework, lab days, and documentation associated with the program.
- Ability to spend at least 5 hours per week on online coursework for a full year.
- Access to a computer with internet, browser, multimedia capabilities, and PDF viewing.
- Ability to attend in-person lab skills/review days and testing sessions within a reasonable driving distance.
- Willingness to track work hours and skill practice using provided forms.
- Understand and agree to the terms of the Registered Apprenticeship Program.
- Ability to work with a Coach and as part of a primary care team.
- Be genuinely interested in a career as a Certified Medical Assistant.
- Possible cost-sharing for training fee (up to $3,000) and related materials.
- Ability to balance evening/weekend coursework with full-time work.
- Proficiency with English; Spanish and/or Russian preferred depending on clinic needs.
- Basic mathematical skills and ability to convert units as needed.
- Reasoning ability to solve practical problems and interpret instructions.
- Computer literacy with Microsoft Word, Excel; familiarity with EHR/PM systems.
