Job Summary
Analyze heavy equipment and trucks to discover, troubleshoot, and repair malfunctions, including trains, cranes, excavators, and front-end loaders. Operate and inspect machinery to diagnose defects, safely replace defective parts, and perform quality assurance tests before returning equipment to service. Develop maintenance schedules, track service requests with detailed logs, and conduct interviews with operators to verify symptoms. Dismantle and rebuild components according to vendor specifications, weld structural members, and perform routine maintenance such as lubrication and fluid checks. Provide consultation on usage and preventative measures to operators while collaborating with vendors and co-workers. Maintain up-to-date warranty paperwork and submit purchase requests for new parts.
Required Qualifications
- High School Diploma or GED
- Must be available on an on-call basis for emergency trouble call response
- Must be able to work a nonstandard workweek, overtime, and various shift work
- Must wear protective equipment including, but not limited to, high-visibility apparel, hard hat, hearing protection, safety-toe boots, safety glasses, etc.
- Must complete trainings and pass examinations
- Must pass all required assessments
- Must pass a pre-employment medical examination, including a drug screen, as well as random and for-cause testing for drugs and/or alcohol during employment
- Must pass a pre-employment background screening
- Must be able to meet and comply with the manufacturer's weight limitation safety rating and recommendations for any equipment associated with performing their duties, including the safety rating for ladders (both portable and affixed) and fall arrest equipment
- Heavy lifting, carrying, pushing, and pulling up to 70 pounds occasionally and up to 100 pounds on a rare basis
- Perform work activities that require the ability to stand, stoop, bend, crouch, balance, climb, stretch, lift, carry, push, pull, and crawl
- Perform work activities that require the use of hands simultaneously while using fine eye-hand coordination to make fine adjustments to parts, instrument settings, controls, etc.
- Exposure to equipment that may intensify the heat factor on an occasional basis
- Demonstrate auditory and visual acuity/tracking/inspection
- Work safely to prevent on the job accidents and injuries
- Must adhere to the rules, guidelines, regulations, and policies of the Company, Commonwealth of MA, federal government, FRA, NORAC Operating Rules, health and safety, and Employee Handbook
- Must possess and maintain a current and valid driver's license in good standing and be insurable under Massachusetts Coastal Railroad's auto policy throughout employment
- Must be able to work outside in all weather conditions, in confined spaces and/or elevated heights, and on level or uneven surfaces
Desired Qualifications
- CDL
- Certification from a vocational school or completion of apprenticeship
- Valid certification (i.e., Automotive Service Excellence)
- Welding experience
