Job Summary
Manage laboratory workflow, capacity, and turnaround times while ensuring operations comply with ASTM, ISO/IEC 17025, and Nadcap standards. Oversee equipment calibrations, perform and approve various mechanical tests including tensile and fatigue analysis, and coordinate with procurement and quality for maintenance. Supervise technicians by approving timesheets, managing vacation schedules, and conducting performance reviews alongside training initiatives. Support capital equipment planning, assist with RFQs and method development, and collaborate cross-functionally on sample preparation and fixture design. Adhere to safety policies and participate in audits, witness tests, and hiring decisions to drive key performance metrics such as quality, delivery, and uptime.
Required Qualifications
- Associate or bachelor's degree in mechanical engineering, materials science or related field
- 3+ to 5 years mechanical testing experience
- Minimum of 2 years in leadership
- Strong supervision skills
- Training skills
- Strong mechanical aptitude
- Performance management skills
- Proficiency performing various mechanical tests (tensile, fatigue, fracture, hardness, impact, creep, stress-rupture and elevated temperature testing) to applicable standard
- Some theoretical knowledge
- Familiarity/experience with ISO/IEC 17025, Nadcap, and customer audits, witness testing and corrective actions
- Ability to manage workflow, capacity, and turnaround times
- Employment of a variety of continuous improvement tools/skills to drive KPIs such as quality, delivery, utilization, and uptime
- Strong computer skills (LIMS, data integrity/traceability, MS Office, Outlook, Teams, Excel)
- Proficiency with calibration, validation, laboratory safety, and metrology principles
- Ability to work independently
- Ability to accommodate flexible scheduling
- Ability to make decisions
- Ability to communicate effectively (including professional etiquette)
- Ability to stand for extended periods
- Ability to lift <50 lbs. frequently and >50 lbs. occasionally
- Ability to track multiple testing jobs/programs from start to finish
- Ability to assist with contract review of job status daily
