Mechanical Failure Analysis Specialist - Engines

Job Summary

Determine root cause of component failure on Caterpillar mining engines by observing disassembly conditions, researching component history, and analyzing individual parts. Prepare technical reports for customers and Caterpillar to initiate product and performance improvements. Assist in developing technical documentation, assessing product improvement recommendations, and leading business process or continuous improvement projects. Tech leads collect data for team members and fill daily FLHAs while adhering to safety policies. Work rotating shifts including early, evening, weekend, and office hours within Production and office schedules.

Required Qualifications

  • significant experience and/or an Engineering degree in related discipline (mechanical, metallurgical, Etc.)
  • Technical knowledge of large diesel engines & systems
  • Mechanical Engineering Technologists or Heavy Duty Mechanics with equivalent experience
  • Strong root cause analysis skills
  • The ability to effectively communicate technical findings in writing or verbally
  • The ability to clearly communicate work instructions to production personnel in order to document and preserve evidence of failure
  • The ability to work within a team environment
  • The ability to work safely, lead by example, and to contribute to overall company safety
  • Fully conversant with Microsoft Office environment (Word, Excel)
  • Familiar with a mid-scale ERP environment
  • Familiar with Caterpillar SIS
  • Familiar with ISO Quality Assurance Programs
  • Coverage on early, evening, weekend and office shifts
  • Production hours which encompass 5AM to 330PM and 4PM to 230AM Monday to Thursday (2 shifts), as well as weekends from 6AM to 630PM
  • Regular 8AM to 4:30 PM office shifts

Desired Qualifications

  • Technical knowledge of large diesel engines & systems, preferably but not exclusively Caterpillar Products including Caterpillar 3400, 3500 and C-series engines
  • Mechanical Engineering Technologists or Heavy Duty Mechanics with equivalent experience
  • Strong root cause analysis skills
  • The ability to effectively communicate technical findings in writing or verbally
  • The ability to clearly communicate work instructions to production personnel in order to document and preserve evidence of failure
  • The ability to work within a team environment
  • The ability to work safely, lead by example, and to contribute to overall company safety
  • Fully conversant with Microsoft Office environment (Word, Excel)
  • Familiar with a mid-scale ERP environment
  • Familiar with Caterpillar SIS
  • Familiar with Metallurgy principles
  • Familiar with ISO Quality Assurance Programs
