Job Summary
Lead mechanical design and development of next-generation automated robotic installation tools from concept through production. Design precision mechanisms, enclosures, and assemblies using 3D CAD, integrating motors, drives, and sensors while performing tolerance stack-up, kinematics, and structural analyses. Assemble, characterize, and troubleshoot mechanical prototypes, collaborating with electronics and controls engineers to iterate toward field-ready products. Drive product architecture, feasibility studies, and engineering verification, creating detailed documentation and managing intellectual property submissions. Collaborate with manufacturing, suppliers, and regulatory teams to ensure compliance and scale designs into production. This role supports 3M's global mission to deliver energy solutions sustainably, requiring on-site work at the Austin, TX center with up to 15% travel.
Required Qualifications
- Bachelor's degree in Engineering (such as Mechanical Engineering, Mechatronics Engineering, Robotics Engineering) completed and verified prior to start from an accredited institution
- Three (3) or more years' experience designing electromechanical or automated equipment from concept through prototype and production
- Three (3) or more years' experience with 3D mechanical CAD such as SolidWorks and engineering documentation including detailed drawings, GD&T, and BOMs
- Three (3) or more years' experience designing mechanisms, motion systems, and precision assemblies, including integration with motors, actuators, sensors, electronics, and system prototyping/troubleshooting
- Must be legally authorized to work in country of employment without sponsorship for employment visa status (e.g., H1B status)

Desired Qualifications
- Master's degree or higher (completed and verified prior to start) in Mechanical Engineering, Mechatronics or related discipline and from an accredited institution
- Strong exposure to electronics, robotics and control systems, and their mechanical integration
- Experience with servo/torque motors, motion control and encoder/feedback mechanisms
- Experience with robotics, industrial automation equipment, or autonomous systems
- Experience with GD&T, tolerance analysis and design for manufacturing/assembly (DFM/DFA)
- Experience with FEA (structural, thermal, or modal) and design validation
- Experience integrating machine-vision cameras, optics and lighting into mechanical assemblies
- Familiarity with EtherCAT or other industrial fieldbus and machine-control architectures
- Familiarity with programming and debugging electronic or control systems
- Familiarity with safety, machinery and regulatory standards (CE, UL, ISO 12100)
