Mechanical Engineer – Mid Level – Gas Pipeline Focus (Hybrid)

Job Summary

Prepare detailed engineering designs for gas, hazardous liquids, and slurry pipeline systems, including trenchless crossings and compressor station piping. Manage project execution by coordinating milestones, preparing cost estimates, and updating clients while conducting field investigations for utility surveys and cathodic protection. Assist in planning station upgrades, relocation, and protection of existing pipelines within a cooperative team environment. This role supports establishing capabilities for natural gas and oil sectors with up to 10% domestic travel and a hybrid schedule based in Ann Arbor, Michigan.

Required Qualifications

  • Bachelor's degree in mechanical engineering or civil engineering
  • 5+ years or relevant experience
  • Professional Engineer (PE) certification or ability and willingness to obtain
  • Knowledge of oil and gas industry engineering practices, including 49 CFR Parts 192 and 195, ASME codes, and API standards
  • Willingness and ability to travel
  • Possession of a current, valid driver's license and acceptable driving record
  • Must be legally authorized to work in the United States without the need for sponsorship by Barr, now or in the future
  • Ability to work in locations that include rough terrain typical of construction outdoor sites with limited accessibility and moving machinery
  • Must be able to perform job duties with or without reasonable accommodation
  • Flexible working style and willingness to occasionally modify their schedule to meet deadlines and/or client needs
  • Ability to work cooperatively in a project team environment that encourages self-initiative
  • Effective project organization and management skills
  • Hybrid work arrangement (splitting time worked between a Barr office and a home office)
  • Up to 10% domestic fieldwork, with an average of one day every two weeks during projects to verify dimensions and project progress

Desired Qualifications

  • Strong engineering design experience related to pipeline systems engineering, system integrity, and construction
  • Experience related to piping in the natural gas, liquefied natural gas, and oil sectors
  • Strong interpersonal, oral, and written communication skills
  • Familiarity with AutoCAD
  • Familiarity with Microsoft Office suite
  • Professional Engineer (PE) certification (preferred)
