Mechanical Engineer III-Advanced Product Design & Manufacturing

Job Summary

Design mechanical components, assemblies, and manufacturing solutions for prototype and pre-production robotic actuator systems, ensuring performance, reliability, cost, and manufactability objectives are achieved. Create engineering drawings, specifications, bills of materials, and procurement packages while evaluating new manufacturing technologies to improve product quality and development cycle time. Coordinate prototype builds by planning component procurement, supporting assembly and engineering validation, and managing design iterations with cross-functional teams. Apply GD&T, FMEA, and SPC methods to support Design for Manufacturing, Assembly, and Reliability activities, transitioning products from concept through production readiness. Operate primarily onsite in an office, test lab, and test track environment with occasional domestic and international travel.

Required Qualifications

  • Bachelor of Science Degree in Mechanical Engineering or related engineering discipline
  • 5+ years of experience in mechanical product development, prototype manufacturing, or advanced manufacturing engineering
  • Strong understanding of manufacturing processes including: CNC machining, Injection molding, Casting, Heat Treat and Additive Manufacturing (3D printing)
  • Experience procuring prototype components from domestic and international suppliers
  • Use and application of component GD&T based on product functional requirements
  • Proficiency with CAD software such as SolidWorks, Creo, CATIA, or Siemens NX
  • Design and Process Failure Mode Effects and Analysis (FMEA)
  • Application of Statistical Process Control (SPC) methods and principles to product design requirements
  • Excellent verbal and technical communication skills required
  • Ability to sit for extended periods while working at a computer
  • Ability to work in a test lab environment
  • Occasional lifting of items up to 20 lbs
  • Frequent walking, standing, and bending as needed to perform duties
  • Primarily onsite and limited travel

Desired Qualifications

  • Experience with product design and manufacturing involving rotary bearings, recirculating ball screws, and belt- and gear-reduction mechanisms is preferred
  • Strong project management, communication, and supplier management skills
  • Ability to coordinate and organize program deliverables from multiple sources and customers
  • Effective interpersonal skills with internal and external customers
