Mechanical Designer - Kiewit Industrial & Water Engineering

Job Summary

Utilize SmartPlant P&ID to draft Piping and Instrumentation Diagrams (P&ID) and create mechanical sketches, layouts, and detail drawings based on design engineer direction. Develop and check design deliverables against industry codes, contract requirements, and company standards while navigating 3D models to verify interferences and constructability. Coordinate with internal and external design partners, equipment suppliers, and construction teams to review work progress and results. Complete miscellaneous tasks supporting project or department development and take on complex assignments as directed by the Lead Designer. This role supports Kiewit's Industrial and Water Engineering Group in delivering EPC and design-build projects across mining, process industries, and water markets.

Required Qualifications

  • Bachelor's or Associates degree in Computer Aided Design and Drafting Technology or related field
  • Knowledge of design software such as SmartPlant, AutoCAD, MicroStation, Inventor, or SolidWorks
  • Proficient in basic computing programs including the Microsoft Office suite (Word, Excel, Outlook, PowerPoint)
  • 0 - 2 years of industry-related design experience
  • Regular, reliable attendance
  • Work productively and meet deadlines timely
  • Communicate and interact effectively and professionally with supervisors, employees, and others individually or in a team environment
  • Perform work safely and effectively
  • Understand and follow oral and written instructions, including warning signs, equipment use, and other policies
  • Work during normal operating hours to organize and complete work within given deadlines
  • Work overtime and weekends as required
  • Travel in the U.S. and internationally (5-15%)

Desired Qualifications

  • Candidates shall be familiar with current drawing and technical tools, programs, and software with an understanding of design documentation creation and layouts
  • Candidates shall be capable of exhibiting flexibility in work assignments while maintaining a growth mindset and continuing to develop in their technical and professional career
  • Ability to take on more complex tasks and assignments as directed by the Lead Designer
  • Must be able to interact professionally with all levels of management while simultaneously managing a diversified workload and challenging situations efficiently and effectively
  • Regularly sit, stand, walk and talk and listen
  • Occasionally lift and move objects up to 30 pounds
