Job Summary
Mechanical Designer III - Pipe develops 2D/3D drawings and reviews work from CAD Drafters, collaborating with cross-functional teams and suppliers to support vessel design and construction. The role requires CAD proficiency (2D/3D AutoCAD, ShipConstructor, Navisworks), heavy emphasis on 3D modeling, orthographic views from isometrics, and the ability to interface with multiple design disciplines to create accurate 3D models for shipyard/vessel projects. Candidates should have a High School Diploma or equivalent, an Associate degree or higher in CAD preferred, and 4 years of 3D modeling experience with 5–10 years in shipyard design or production/construction. Strong communication, scheduling discipline, and familiarity with Microsoft Office are required, along with the ability to lead and train CAD team members and adapt to safety and environmental regulations. The role is based in Mobile, AL, and involves interfacing with internal/external teams and suppliers, with a focus on US Navy vessel design and high-speed aluminum vessel construction, including modular construction and equipment electrical fitout knowledge. The position may include supervision of CAD Drafters and Designers I-III and requires willingness to undergo a drug screen and background check.
Required Qualifications
- High School Diploma or equivalent required
- Associates Degree or higher in CAD preferred
- 4 years minimum of 3D modeling experience
- 5 to 10 years of shipyard design or production/construction experience or equivalent experience
- Experience in construction of high speed aluminum vessels preferred
- Experience with modular construction methods preferred
- Experience in design and construction of US Navy vessels preferred
- Excellent written and oral communication skills
- Understanding of scheduling and an ability to adhere to strict deadlines
- Computer literate and familiar with Microsoft Office products
- Experience using 2D and 3D AutoCAD

- Thorough understanding of vessel design in two or more areas (Equipment/Electrical Fitout/Foundations/Hull/HVAC/Material Pipe/Product Hierarchy Structure)
- Able to interpret system schematics, structural key plans, compartment arrangements, and electrical diagrams to create 3D CAD models
- May lead the work of CAD Drafters and Designer I-III
- May review technical adequacy of drawings and provide direction to meet customer requirements
- May train CAD Drafters and Designers I-III according to established standards and procedures
- Willingness to submit to a drug screen and background check
