Mechanical Design Intern - Kiewit Industrial & Water Engineering (Summer 2027)

Job Summary
Draft Piping and Instrumentation Diagrams (P&ID) using SmartPlant P&ID and create mechanical sketches, layouts, and detail drawings. Develop and check design deliverables against industry codes, contract requirements, and company standards while navigating 3D models to identify interferences and constructability issues. Coordinate with internal and external design partners and construction teams to review work progress and results. Complete miscellaneous tasks supporting project or department development. This summer 2027 internship is based in Lenexa, KS for the Industrial and Water Engineering Group, which focuses on EPC and design-build delivery across mining, energy, and water treatment markets.
Required Qualifications
- Currently pursuing a Bachelor's or Associates degree in Computer Aided Design and Drafting Technology or related field
- Knowledge of design software such as SmartPlant, AutoCAD, Microstation, Smart3D, Revit
- Proficient in basic computing programs such as Microsoft Office suite (Word, Excel, Outlook, PowerPoint)
- Must be able to interact professionally with all levels of management
- Must be able to lift and move objects up to 30 pounds
- Regular, reliable attendance
- Work productively and meet deadlines timely
- Communicate and interact effectively and professionally with supervisors, employees, and others individually or in a team environment
- Perform work safely and effectively
- Work during normal operating hours
- Work overtime and weekends as required
Desired Qualifications
- Candidates shall be familiar with current drawing and technical tools, programs, and software with an understanding of design documentation creation and layouts
- Candidates shall be capable of exhibiting flexibility in work assignments while maintaining a growth mindset and continuing to develop in their technical and professional career
