Job Summary
Perform routine mechanical work on U.S. Navy shore facilities, waterborne vessels, surface ships, and submarines, including inspections, repairs, modernization, and alterations. Execute disconnects and connections of mechanical joints, remove and install equipment using sound engineering practices, and utilize precision measurement equipment such as scales and vernier calipers. Conduct firewatch duties and maintain a clean work area. Travel to other locations as required. Work involves standing, walking, climbing, and carrying objects up to 50 pounds while occasionally exposed to fumes, moving mechanical parts, and confined spaces.
Required Qualifications
- Proficient in the use of precision measurement equipment including scales, vernier calipers
- Must have completed a formal related course of study in trade through either a community college, technical or trade school, military training, formal company training program or an apprentice program
- Must have 1-5 years of verifiable experience as a mechanic in an industrial environment (i.e., shipbuilding, ship repair or nuclear power plants)
- Must be able to successfully pass a criminal background check and obtain and maintain a security badge for all military installations and civilian shipyards as needed
- Must be able to read and interpret blueprints, sketches, written technical instructions and manuals
- Must possess working knowledge of shipboard operating requirements
- Must understand material safety data sheets (MDS)
- Must be able to follow safety procedures
- Must be able to read and interpret documents such as safety rules, operating and maintenance instructions, and procedure manuals
- Ability to apply common sense understanding to carry out instructions furnished in written, oral, or diagram form
- Ability to deal with problems involving several concrete variables in standardized situations
- Must possess basic computer skills to enter data into different data basis
- Must be able to perform each essential duty satisfactorily
- Employees may be required to travel for work to other locations
