Job Summary

Troubleshoot vehicles to determine repairs or adjustments needed and perform skilled operations in the repair and overhaul of mechanical, hydraulic, and electrical systems for internal combustion motor equipment. Conduct diagnostics using electronic diagnostic tools, execute New York State safety and emissions inspections, and perform timed interval preventive maintenance. Execute minor welding repairs, attach and remove snowplow blades, and operate school buses or motorized construction vehicles as required. Perform routine labor and semi-skilled buildings and grounds maintenance when assigned. Requires thorough knowledge of automotive and school bus repair terminology, tools, and standard methods, along with demonstrated ability to make difficult repairs to heavy internal combustion engines.

Required Qualifications

  • Must meet the Chautauqua County Civil Service requirements
  • Graduation from high school or possession of a high school equivalency diploma
  • Successful completion of a two-year post-secondary program for heavy diesel engine equipment technician
  • Successful completion of a two-year program for Automotive Technology and one (1) year of experience as a skilled heavy equipment automotive mechanic
  • Two (2) years of experience as a skilled heavy equipment automotive mechanic
  • Possession, at time of appointment and during service, of a valid NYS Motor Vehicle Operator's license appropriate for the type of vehicles which the employee may from time to time operate
  • Possession, at time of appointment, of a New York State Class D Operator's License
  • Possession of a valid NYS Class B CDL and air brakes certification within six (6) months after appointment, or before completion of probationary period whichever is sooner
  • Possession of a valid NYS Class A CDL and air brakes certification within six (6) months after appointment, or before completion of probationary period whichever is sooner
  • Possession of a valid NYS Class B CDL with 'P' endorsement and air brakes certification within six (6) months after appointment, or before completion of probationary period whichever is sooner
  • Must have own tools at time of appointment and during service
  • Must possess NYS certification as a motor vehicle inspector
  • Must possess certification per 42 U.S.C. Section 7671 h for servicing of motor vehicle air conditioners within 12 months of appointment
