Job Summary

Diagnose, repair, and overhaul hydraulic, electrical, braking, and engine systems on city vehicles and heavy-duty equipment. Perform scheduled preventive maintenance, field repairs, and emergency roadside responses while maintaining accurate work logs and managing parts orders. Conduct oxyacetylene welding, fabrication, and accessory installations as needed. Schedule and supervise fleet operations when assigned, train lower-level mechanics, and mentor staff on complex maintenance procedures. Ensure compliance with safety protocols, state inspections, and turnaround time standards. Available for 24/7 emergency call-outs.

Required Qualifications

  • High school diploma or G.E.D.
  • General mechanic experience in both gasoline and diesel engine maintenance and repair including experience with heavy-duty equipment and trucks
  • Capable of completing minor field repairs
  • Maintain vehicle comeback rate of 5% or less
  • Maintain turnaround time of 7 days per work order
  • State Inspection certification
  • A/C certification
  • ASE T8 Preventative Maintenance certification
  • Valid Utah Class B Commercial Driver License
  • Proficient with diagnosing and repairing a wide range of equipment
  • Capable of completing all field repairs
  • ASE T4 Brakes certification
  • ASE T5 Suspension certification
  • Strong leadership skills and capable of mentoring level I and II mechanics
  • Proficient with independently diagnosing, repairing, and maintaining all equipment
  • Capable of completing all field repairs without guidance
  • ASE T6 Electrical certification
  • ASE T7 HVAC certification
  • EVT E4 Body Chassis Ambulance certification
  • EVT F1 Inspection Maintenance and Testing certification
  • Knowledge of safety practices and procedures
  • Knowledge of basic personal computers
  • Knowledge of budgeting processes and purchasing materials and equipment
  • Skill with light and heavy equipment and automotive apparatus
  • Ability to communicate with immediate supervisors and other city employees
  • Ability to communicate effectively both verbally and in writing, including email correspondence, keeping logs, writing reports and making presentations at City meetings
  • Must be available to respond to emergency call-outs 24/7 while on-call
  • Must lift and/or move up to 100 pounds
