Job Summary
Mechanic I in the Transportation Department performs skilled maintenance, inspection, diagnosis, and repair of school buses, activity buses, and other district vehicles to ensure safe, reliable operation and compliance with NCDPI, DOT, and district standards. Responsibilities include preventive maintenance, minor to moderate repairs, diagnostic work, and maintaining accurate maintenance records. Knowledge of automotive/diesel maintenance, ability to diagnose mechanical and electrical problems with diagnostic tools, and the capacity to work independently or as part of a team are required. Education required is a High School Diploma or GED; a valid NC Driver License and CDL with appropriate endorsements, plus NCDPI School Bus Inspector Certification within the district’s timeframe, are required. Physical ability to lift up to 75 pounds regularly and up to 100 pounds occasionally, work in varying weather, and operate shop equipment. The position emphasizes safety, recordkeeping, and professional conduct within the Transportation Department.
Required Qualifications
- High School Diploma or GED
- Valid North Carolina Driver License
- Must obtain and maintain a North Carolina Commercial Driver License (CDL) with appropriate endorsements as required by the district
- Must obtain NCDPI School Bus Inspector Certification within the timeframe established by the district
