Job Summary
Perform preventative maintenance, tune-ups, and repairs on motorized equipment assigned to the Department of Public Service, Building and Maintenance, Police, and Fire Departments. Test drive vehicles to verify engine and brake systems, investigate trouble areas, and maintain parts inventory while keeping cost and time records. Clean the garage area, fill fuel tanks, and replace components such as universal joints, water pumps, and batteries. Advise supervisors on equipment condition and recommend purchases or specifications for new bids. Work unsupervised with specific assignments from the Superintendent, adhering to safety practices and handling physical labor requiring strength and stamina.
Required Qualifications
- 18 years of age or older
- High School degree or equivalent
- Must be able to pass a Civil Service examination
- Must be able to pass a drug test
- basic mechanical training obtained from practical training or high school, Armed Service or vocational school
- active State of Michigan mechanic certifications in at least three applicable repair categories
- maintain certification as required
- basic mechanical aptitude and knowledge
- ability to interpret material of a technical nature, such as equipment manuals
- knowledge of tools that are standard and metric
- ability to improvise or make suggestions to improve the efficiency/effectiveness in completing jobs
