Job Summary
Mechanic 1 Diesel/Vehicle — Night Shift role performing day-to-day maintenance and repairs to a Smithfield fleet to ensure safe operation. Responsibilities include repairing and maintaining light, medium, and heavy vehicles and trailers by reviewing shop orders and problem descriptions; removing, replacing, assembling, and installing parts; working with diesel engines, electrical systems, fuel, hydraulic, braking, heating/air conditioning, suspensions, axles, tires, wheels, and related components; performing preventive maintenance and DOT inspections; diagnosing problems, testing repairs, training other mechanics, documenting parts and time, and following safety and environmental procedures. Requires high school diploma or GED with 1+ years of related experience (or 4 years’ direct diesel-mechanic experience); vocational/technical diploma or associate degree preferred; valid driver’s license with CDL-A preferred; strong teamwork, basic computer skills, ability to lift 100 pounds, and willingness to work occasional weekends and on-call for emergencies.
Required Qualifications
- High school diploma or GED; 1+ years of related experience and/or training in industrial mechanical maintenance or food manufacturing environment; or 4 years’ direct experience as a diesel mechanic.
- Vocational Diploma, Technical Diploma or associate degree from a technical maintenance or vocational school (Preferred).
- Advanced knowledge of a vehicle’s electrical system and diesel engine mechanisms.
- Ability to run diagnostic tests on vehicles and test drive to gauge performance; maintain detailed records.
- Proficiency with diesel engine diagnostic software.
- Valid driver's license and acceptable driving record; CDL-A preferred.
- Basic computer skills.
- Willingness to work occasional weekends; on-call for emergencies.
- Must have appropriate inventory of hand tools; ability to operate hoisting/jacking equipment.
- Ability to lift up to 100 pounds; capable of working in loud/fumes environments; outdoor work in all weather.
