Job Summary

Stand navigational watch, assist in vessel handling and barge positioning, and lead deck operations including line handling and towing gear setup. Supervise Deckhands during cargo operations while monitoring vessel condition, drafts, and cargo security. Ensure safe handling of mooring lines and rigging, support voyage planning, and perform routine vessel maintenance. Enforce safety policies, participate in emergency drills, and immediately report all incidents to the Supervisor. Work outdoors in harsh weather conditions under the Captain's direction while maintaining situational awareness of crew and equipment.

Required Qualifications

  • Valid Merchant Mariner Credential (MMC)
  • Mate endorsement of at least 100 Ton Near Coastal
  • Towing endorsement (Mate of Towing or equivalent)
  • Valid TWIC
  • Current USCG Medical Certificate
  • Ability to work outdoors in harsh weather and marine conditions
  • Ability to live on the tug, in tight quarters
  • Physically capable of lifting 50 lbs, handling heavy lines, and performing manual labor
  • Strong leadership, communication, and decision-making skills
  • Ability to work long hours in a team environment aboard vessels and barges
  • Strong situational awareness around heavy equipment and moving vessels
  • Must be able to pass pre-employment drug testing and participate in the company's USCG/DOT drug testing program
  • Valid driver's license and acceptable driving record for the past three (3) years to be eligible under company vehicle insurance policy
  • Steel toed boots required on the job

Desired Qualifications

  • Experience as a Mate or senior deckhand on tug and barge units
  • Experience with coastal and/or river towing operations
  • Experience working in Alaska or remote locations
  • Familiarity with shallow water navigation and seasonal operating constraints
  • Experience supervising crew and leading deck operations
