Master Technician - Senior Start Up

Job Summary
The Master Technician - Senior Start Up leads on-site commissioning and programming of Caterpillar generator systems (10 kW to multi-MW) and integrates them with site power infrastructure including ATS, switchgear, and SCADA/controls. Acts as the technical authority for initial start-up, functional testing, system programming, troubleshooting, and customer turnover, ensuring safe, reliable operation in accordance with NEC, NFPA 70/70E/110, IEEE, and Caterpillar commissioning standards. Responsibilities include CAT control platform configuration and troubleshooting, governor/AVR optimization, load testing and performance validation, ATS testing across multiple manufacturers, switchgear integration, root-cause troubleshooting of power quality and control issues, safety leadership (NFPA 70E, JHAs), and comprehensive documentation and end-user training. Minimum requirements include a High School diploma (technical college preferred), 5-7+ years in generator packages/switchgear/ATS, diesel/gas engine repair experience, CAT software proficiency, valid driver’s license, and strong communication skills.
Required Qualifications
- High School graduate; technical college graduate preferred
- 5-7+ years' experience with generator packages, switchgear, and Automatic Transfer Switches
- 3+ years as a high level GPEC EPG Master Technician performer for internal candidates (as applicable)
- Experience in diagnosing and repairing diesel and gas engine failures
- Proficiency with CAT control platforms (EMCP 2/3/4, Cat Digital Genset Controllers, MCP, LSM)
- Knowledge of governor/AVR parameters, load sharing, kVAR/PF controls, and paralleling logic
- Experience with ATS start-up, testing, and troubleshooting for Caterpillar, ASCO, Eaton, Zenith, ABB
- Knowledge of LV/MV switchgear components, protective devices, interlocking schemes, and control wiring
- Ability to perform load bank tests, waveform analysis, and transient testing
- Strong documentation skills for commissioning reports and redlines
- Valid state driver’s license and ability to operate a company vehicle and travel overnight
- Experience with CAT Electronic Technician Software is a plus
- Excellent customer service and communication skills
