Job Summary
Conduct Master's thesis research addressing critical gaps in the bean value chain across 15 sub-Saharan African countries, focusing on gender equity, breeding, seed systems, integrated crop management, nutrition, markets, and climate resilience. Design and execute field trials, laboratory analyses, and on-farm demonstrations to generate evidence-based solutions for farmers, policymakers, and private sector actors. Collaborate with joint supervision from an academic supervisor and a PABRA scientist while developing a technical concept note, budget estimate, and one-year work plan aligned with PABRA's strategic objectives. Submit a comprehensive application including a cover letter, methodology, and supporting documentation by the August 17, 2026 deadline.
Required Qualifications
- Be enrolled in a Master's program (MSc or equivalent) at a recognized PABRA partner university in Africa.
- Have completed all coursework and be ready to begin thesis research (proof of coursework completion required).
- Have an assigned academic supervisor who supports the proposed research.
- Be a national of a PABRA member country in sub-Saharan Africa and able to conduct research in any one of the 15 countries (Kenya, Uganda, Tanzania, Rwanda, Burundi, Ethiopia, Zambia, Zimbabwe, Malawi, Mozambique, Madagascar, DRC, Cameroon, Ghana and Guinea Conakry) where the BRAINS project is implemented.
- Demonstrate a commitment to return to their home institution or national bean program upon completion of studies.
- Be aged below 35 years
