Job Summary
Support trades teams on active class surface ships to assist with alterations and installations for fleet modernization, including removing, installing, and upgrading industrial equipment, structure, and ventilation. Perform a variety of simple and complicated tasks related to shipboard maintenance by working from blueprints, engineering sketches, charts, or work orders. Install, maintain, and repair structural and mechanical systems while cutting, fitting, assembling, and welding sheet metal, ductwork, and support structures using hand and powered tools. Troubleshoot and diagnose malfunctions to eliminate problems in minimum time, inspect completed work for conformance to specifications, and develop technical documents including controlled work packages and reports. Commute to and maintain access to shipyards and military bases in the Hampton Roads area, with potential travel to locations around the country and abroad when not assigned to local tasks. Weekend and/or overtime hours may be required depending on contract awards and support needed.
Required Qualifications
- U.S. citizen
- High School education or Trade School or equivalent, and 2 years of related experience
- Ability to obtain medical clearance to wear a half-face respirator
- Experience installing, maintaining and repairing structural and mechanical systems and associated equipment
- Ability to accurately use and read standard measuring instruments
- Familiarity with reading and interpreting drawings, blueprints, technical manuals, engineering sketches, charts and/or work orders as well as written and verbal instruction for products to be fabricated and/or installed
- Ability to work outside of trade specific requirements as team projects require, assisting team members towards task completion
- Ability to comply with verbal instruction, safety procedures, quality control steps, and procedures
- Ability to work in a team environment and be able to communicate effectively with others
- Ability to obtain and maintain a DoD security clearance and maintain clearance level throughout employment
- Ability to obtain shipyard access credentials within 7 days of start date and maintain credentials throughout employment
- Ability to travel between 25% and 50% when not assigned to local tasking
- Ability to provide hand tools and trade specific PPE per trades designation
- Must be able to lift, carry and transport heavy equipment and boxes
- Ability to work on and climb ladders
- Ability to work in extreme temperature environments
- Ability to work aboard ships
- Ability to work in shipyards
- Ability to work under industrial conditions
- Ability to work in confined spaces
- Ability to perform other duties as required which may involve high heat, humidity, noise and dirty conditions
- Ability to work aloft or over the sides of vessels
- Ability to ride ships at sea for extended periods
- Ability to wear a respirator
- Ability to travel within and outside of the continental United States

Desired Qualifications
- Prefer technical/professional certifications
- Experience performing mechanical or ventilation work aboard naval vessels
- Experience with ventilation, HVAC, and ductwork
- Graduated from and/or completed a vocational school or skilled trades certificate program
- Current Shipyard Competent Person Certification
- Current OSHA 10 Maritime Certificate
