Job Summary

Associate Researcher or Researcher role supporting decarbonization policy research for EU/IMO in the maritime sector. Responsibilities include conducting policy-oriented research on EU and IMO goals, analyzing energy use and emissions from domestic and international shipping, comparing policy options, developing decarbonization recommendations, writing publications for technical and non-technical audiences, presenting findings internally and externally, organizing outreach activities (briefings, meetings, workshops), and engaging with external stakeholders including government entities and NGOs. The position involves collaboration with colleagues and consultants, potential lead responsibilities at the Researcher level, and travel within the EU. Preferred qualifications include quantitative/ econometric skills, Python or similar programming experience, and strong communication abilities. Fluency in English required; German is a plus. The role is based in Germany, France, Sweden, or Ireland, with an initial 6-month Berlin orientation and a path to work from within Germany, France, Ireland, or Sweden with regular Berlin visits, and offers a starting salary in EUR 70,000 (Associate Researcher) or EUR 84,000 (Researcher), 2-year contract with potential extension, and hybrid/remote work flexibility.

Required Qualifications

  • Bachelor’s degree or higher in engineering, transportation, economics, environmental science, public policy, or a related field (Associate Researcher)
  • Master’s degree or higher in engineering, transportation, economics, environmental science, public policy, or a related field (Researcher)
  • Familiarity with environmental and energy challenges in the maritime shipping sector
  • Exceptional quantitative, analytical, and research skills
  • Big data analysis or econometric modeling experience (preferred)
  • Advanced proficiency in MS Office, especially Excel, and strong programming experience in Python or similar (preferred)
  • Strong interpersonal and communication skills, both written and verbal
  • Fluency in English; German would be an asset
  • Occasional domestic and international travel
