Job Summary

Manufacturing Engineer on Veeco's Manufacturing Operations floor in Somerset, NJ area, responsible for sustaining and improving build processes for MOCVD systems and gas/vapor delivery platforms. The role involves troubleshooting mechanical and electrical hardware during assembly and test, leading root-cause investigations using DFMEA, Fishbone diagrams, and 8D, developing and maintaining assembly/work instructions and technician training materials, implementing engineering changes and deviations in production, contributing to manufacturing readiness and design reviews, and partnering with Design Engineering, Quality, Field Service, and Supply Chain to convert issues into permanent design or process changes. The position emphasizes drive for manufacturability, build repeatability, product quality, and cost/time improvements through data-driven actions and close collaboration with cross-functional teams.

Required Qualifications

  • Bachelor's degree in Mechanical Engineering or Electrical Engineering
  • Minimum of 5 years of experience in manufacturing engineering, sustaining engineering, or hardware support engineering — preferably in low-volume, high-complexity, or engineer-to-order environments
  • Demonstrated ability to troubleshoot complex electromechanical hardware on a production floor
  • Experience sustaining production lines for complex electromechanical systems — including assembly, integration, and test of equipment involving vacuum environments, gas delivery, thermal management, motion systems, or contamination-controlled hardware
  • Able to read and interpret engineering drawings, electrical schematics, 3D models, bills of materials (BOMs), and technical documentation — including Geometric Dimensioning and Tolerancing (GD&T)
  • Proficient in structured problem-solving: DFMEA, 8D, Fishbone analysis, or equivalent methods with track record of implementing corrective actions
  • Familiarity with ERP systems — SAP preferred — for processing engineering changes, managing deviations, and tracking material/production data
  • Experience supporting suppliers or contract manufacturing partners on hardware quality and production issues, including supplier corrective action processes
  • Comfortable working on the production floor alongside technicians during assembly and test, and presenting root-cause findings to plant leadership
  • Skilled at creating clear process documentation — including Sequence of Operations, Method Instructions, and training materials
