Job Summary
Manufacturing/Controls Engineer II provides electrical and controls engineering support across multiple manufacturing areas at Medtronic's General Surgical Products Focus Factory. Lead cost-saving and process-improvement initiatives, retrofit assembly equipment, and procure/implement new equipment. Develop and maintain equipment documentation (operating instructions, electrical schematics, specifications, parameter settings, software backups), support equipment validation (IQ/FAT/SAT) and ensure EHS/compliance. Read schematics, troubleshoot PLC/CNC/PC-based controls, update AutoCAD BOMs, develop equipment specs, collaborate with vendors, identify OEE improvements, participate in design reviews and risk assessments (DFMEA, PFMEA), and coordinate cross-functional activities. Travel up to 10% domestically. U.S. work authorization sponsorship is limited to Principal-level roles; others require unrestricted authorization. For office roles, on-site presence is noted with a minimum of five days onsite weekly.
Required Qualifications
- Baccalaureate degree in Engineering or related field
- Minimum of 2 years of relevant experience OR Master’s degree with minimum of 0 years relevant experience
- Proficiency in electrical and controls design with knowledge of NFPA standards
- Ability to verify equipment compliance with NFPA, OSHA, and other applicable safety standards
- Hands-on experience troubleshooting manufacturing equipment
- Proficiency with standard business and engineering software (Excel, Word, PowerPoint, Project, AutoCAD)
- Experience with PLC platforms (e.g., Mitsubishi, Rockwell) and safety PLC platforms (GuardLogix, CompactLogix, ControlLogix)
- Experience with HMI systems (FactoryTalk ME and SE) and vision systems (Cognex, Keyence)
- Experience with industrial robotics (Stäubli, Yamaha, FANUC, Epson)
- Experience with servo and stepper motion control systems
- Strong written and verbal communication skills
- Ability to navigate cross-functional teams and manage equipment validation (IQ, FAT, SAT)
- Experience with DFMEA/PFMEA and machine risk assessments
