Job Summary
Maintain the litigation docket for the New York and Princeton offices by calendaring incoming documents, calculating procedural deadlines, and verifying database accuracy through spot checks. Advise attorneys on federal, state, and local court rules while managing external legal services such as service of process and document retrieval. Monitor active matters in state and federal courts using databases like eTracks and CourtAlert.com, obtaining decisions and communicating status changes to responsible attorneys. Run and deliver docket reports, handle electronic filings, and act as a liaison with court personnel and process servers. Support the team by training new docketing specialists, assisting in recruitment, and helping develop firmwide docketing policies and best practices.
Required Qualifications
- Bachelor's degree (B. A.) from a four-year college or university
- Minimum five (5) years of related experience
- An equivalent combination of education and experience
- Effectively communicates and presents information, as well as responds to procedural inquiries and questions from attorneys and staff
- Proficient in searching and retrieving information from court‐related databases (e.g., PACER, NYSCEF, CourtAlert.com and Bloomberg) and other on‐line sources of case information
- Hands‐on experience with rules‐based calendaring software (e.g., CompuLaw or ProLaw)
- Must be highly familiar with litigation practice and able to quickly and accurately determine which filings and documents trigger future deadlines
- Demonstrated familiarity with federal, state and local court systems, including electronic filing systems (e.g., PACER, NYSCEF)
- Demonstrated familiarity with Manhattan and New York Civil Practice Law & Rules and Federal Rules of Civil Procedure
- Planning/organizational skills
- Problem solving skills
- Ability to adapt to change and balance competing demands
- Flexibility to work overtime required
- Must be available for weekend shifts
- Must be able to lift 50 lbs
- Valid driver's license
Desired Qualifications
- Notary preferred
- Arrange for legalization of documents for use in foreign countries
- Maintain a database of commonly used forms and precedents
- Assist attorneys with administration of their PACER and NYSCEF accounts
