Job Summary
The Underwater Systems Manager acts as the subject-matter expert for podded propulsion, thrusters, and related underwater systems, overseeing performance, maintenance, and optimization fleetwide. Responsibilities include serving as technical authority for underwater mechanical systems, providing high-level troubleshooting, planning and coordinating repairs and overhauls (including dry-dock activities), leading root-cause investigations, ensuring safe and compliant vessel operations per IMO/SOLAS/MARPOL and classification society requirements (e.g., DNV, Lloyd’s), managing vendor relationships (ABB and other OEMs) for warranties and upgrades, coordinating projects with Ship Managers and shipboard management, delivering technical training, and supporting the Newbuilding Department with specifications and trials. The role requires collaboration with vessel leadership, shipyards, vendors, classification societies, and internal Marine Technical Operations and Marine Technology teams, with occasional travel and vessel visits. Preferred qualifications include ABB Marine Academy Azipod certification and experience with ice-class/high-mmanoeuvrability vessels, data analytics proficiency, and familiarity with hybrid-propulsion trends.
Required Qualifications
- Bachelor’s degree in Marine Engineering, Mechanical Engineering, Electrical Engineering, or equivalent maritime qualifications (e.g., Chief Engineer License)
