Manager - Transportation Operations

Job Summary
Oversee the establishment and revision of bus routes and prepare current and long-range student transportation plans. Handle prompt resolution of student transportation problems by coordinating with principals, central office, parents, and outside agencies. Supervise depot managers and transportation specialists while reviewing and investigating serious student or bus operator problems. Answer mail and phone requests for route and schedule information, then analyze operations to develop objectives and improve efficiency. Act as a liaison between the department, schools, and community, advising the director on budgetary needs and maintaining a library of industry materials. Work irregular hours including evenings, weekends, and overtime during emergencies, with occasional districtwide travel.
Required Qualifications
- High School Diploma or GED
- Clear and valid Texas commercial driver's license with Passenger (P) and School Bus (S) endorsements
- 3 – 5 years of supervisory experience in transportation and fleet operations
- 5 years of experience as a bus driver
- Ability to analyze student transportation operations
- Ability to deal courteously and effectively with school officials, parents, and others
- Ability to supervise, directly or indirectly, large numbers of employees, including several layers of mid-level management
- Demonstrated ability to supervise and evaluate staff
- Regular driving
- Position requires the ability to lift 50 pounds to waist-high
- Frequent districtwide travel
- Must be willing to work irregular hours during emergencies
- Frequent overtime or night work required
Desired Qualifications
- Bachelor's Degree preferred
- College coursework in transportation, management, or other related fields preferred
- Extensive progressively responsible experience, including considerable supervisory experience, in the scheduling, routing, and safe operation of a large fleet of school buses or similar fleet transportation system, or related field-preferred
- Thorough knowledge of the scheduling, routing, and safe operation of school buses or other fleet vehicles
- Knowledge of state-mandated safety requirements and procedures
- Excellent oral and written communication and human relations skills
