Job Summary
Lead efforts to identify, prioritize, and execute habitat-improvement projects on public lands in North Carolina, partnering with public land managers and conservation partners to enhance bird habitats across priority areas. Represent Audubon NC in planning and scoping meetings, help draft public and technical comments, and coordinate monitoring of birds and habitats at project sites. Build and maintain relationships with a broad network of partners (e.g., Joint Ventures, USDA Forest Service, state agencies, parks, land trusts) to advance conservation outcomes, restoring habitat, improving wetlands management, and increasing climate resilience. Coordinate or conduct habitat monitoring and translate results for scientific and general audiences. Advise project partners on restoration design and native plants to support bird habitat; provide on-site assessments; uphold safety culture; support philanthropy and public funding efforts. Collaborate across the Americas with colleagues to align priorities, and engage with Audubon chapters for outreach and partnership development. Represent Audubon NC in public settings and communicate complex information effectively to diverse audiences. Demonstrate strong project management skills, facilitate collaboration among organizations, write grants and reports, and navigate regulatory considerations with varied stakeholders. Willingness to travel, perform fieldwork in varying terrains and weather, and adapt to changing tasks; ability to work independently and as part of a team. Familiarity with ArcGIS and MS Office; willingness to take on new projects as needed.
Required Qualifications
- Bachelor’s degree in wildlife biology, forest or coastal ecology, natural resources management, or related field
- minimum of five years related experience or equivalent combination of education and experience
- ability to manage complex projects with multiple partners and meet deadlines
- strong written and verbal communications skills; ability to build consensus among varied stakeholders
- grant writing experience and ability to produce scientific reports or general-audience materials
- valid driver’s license; willingness to travel (in-state and occasional out-of-state) and work evenings/weekends as needed
- working knowledge of ArcGIS; proficient in Microsoft Office Suite (Word, Excel, PowerPoint)
- experience in restoration design and native-plant guidance advantageous
