Manager of Labor Engineering and Systems
$109,853–$184,613 year
HybridLong Beach, California, United States
Job Summary
Lead the national implementation of warehouse performance management (WPM) tools across the warehouse network, managing full-cycle deployments, project administration, and performance management culture change. Establish, validate, and audit data-driven labor standards using Industrial Engineering methodologies, while mapping disparate Warehouse Management System exports into unified reporting structures for accurate productivity metrics. Serve as the permanent system administrator for the WPM platform, overseeing governance, user hierarchies, and configuration updates to reflect evolving operational needs. Conduct recurring site audits to ensure data integrity, identify standard drift, and partner with leadership to implement Lean process improvements. Design complex labor models for dedicated and multi-customer environments, deliver training programs for general managers and supervisors, and analyze long-term productivity trends to drive efficiency.
Required Qualifications
- Bachelor's Degree in Industrial Engineering (BSIE) or similar
- 6+ years in Industrial Engineering within a Contract Logistics (3PL), high-volume distribution, or manufacturing environment
- WPM Mastery: Proven track record of successfully implementing and maintaining Tier-1 Labor Management Systems (e.g., Easy Metrics, Manhattan, BlueYonder)
- Expert-level understanding of WMS data structures, time and motion models, time study tools (Laubrass, Quetech), database mapping, and data visualization tools (PowerBI, Python, or SQL)
- Exceptional ability to influence site leadership and present complex engineering ROI to executive stakeholders
- Willingness to travel as needed to support recurring implementations and site audits across the national network
- Ability to stand and walk on concrete warehouse floors for extended periods (8–10 hours) during on-site time studies and implementation "Go-Lives"
- Sufficient manual dexterity to operate a laptop, handheld scanners, and tablet-based time-study software while standing or moving
- Close visual acuity to perform extensive data analysis, read WMS code/dashboards, and observe fine-motor warehouse tasks for time-study validation
- Ability to work in warehouse environments that may vary in temperature (non-climate controlled, cold storage, or high-heat environments)
- Ability to troubleshoot abstract data-mapping issues between WMS and WPM without a predefined manual
- High-level competency in statistical analysis, specifically regarding standard deviation and mean performance in labor modeling
- Ability to maintain focus during long periods of data auditing and technical configuration
- High level of alertness to warehouse safety protocols and automated equipment (forklifts, conveyors) while conducting floor-level studies
- The mental fortitude to defend objective engineering standards in the face of pushback from operational leadership or site associates
- Up to 50% travel
- Occasional need to support "Go-Live" events or audits across multiple shifts (including 2nd and 3rd shifts)
- Comfortable working independently on-site with local support
- Managing 1–5 direct reports (e.g., analysts, engineers, or regional IE support)
Desired Qualifications
- 8-10+ years of expereince
- Direct experience with Easy Metrics
- Secondary preference for Tier-1 WPM implementations such as Manhattan Labor Management, BlueYonder (JDA), or TZA ProTrack
- Prior experience mapping data from multiple Tier-1 and Tier-2 systems (e.g., Manhattan, BlueYonder, SAP EWM, or HighJump/Korber)
- Proficiency in PowerBI or Tableau to create executive-level "cost-to-serve" dashboards that go beyond the native WPM reporting
- Competency in SQL to perform deep-dive audits on raw data exports and troubleshoot integration errors at the source
- Lean Six Sigma Green or Black Belt (for post-implementation process optimization)
- PMP (Project Management Professional) certification or similar formal methodology training for large-scale deployments
- Experience specifically within a 3PL environment, with a demonstrated understanding of how labor standards impact Open Book vs. Closed Book contracts and client billing
- Proven experience managing a "Center of Excellence" or a centralized engineering function that supports 20+ geographically dispersed facilities
- Experience designing or maintaining Incentive/Gainshare programs based on WPM data, including the legal and operational guardrails required for success
