Manager, Mechanical Engineering
$125,000–$175,000 year
On-site · Poway, California, United States
Job Summary
Lead and manage a team of 5–10 mechanical engineers focused on the mechanical design and integration of power conversion systems, including enclosure design for power electronics and inverter packaging. Own system-level mechanical integration of inverter platforms into multi-megawatt energy systems, and design and optimize cooling solutions for high-power electronics. Collaborate with electrical, firmware, and manufacturing teams to deliver high-performance, manufacturable, and reliable systems, while guiding tradeoffs across thermal performance, structural integrity, cost, and manufacturability. Ensure environmental protection through IP-rated enclosures and sealing, mentor engineers, lead design reviews, prototyping, and validation testing, and ensure designs meet reliability, safety, and regulatory requirements.
Required Qualifications
- 7+ years of experience in mechanical design for complex electromechanical systems
- 2+ years of experience leading or managing engineering teams
- Bachelor’s or Master’s degree in Mechanical Engineering (or related field)
- Strong expertise in: Enclosure design for industrial or outdoor systems
- Thermal management of power electronics
- Mechanical integration of complex systems
- Experience working with high-power systems (power electronics, industrial, energy, or similar)
- Knowledge of environmental protection design (IP ratings, sealing)
- Familiarity with manufacturing processes (sheet metal, welding, machining, assembly)
- Experience with CAD tools (e.g., SolidWorks or similar) and mechanical simulation tools
- Strong problem-solving skills and ability to work at both system and component levels
- Effective communicator with cross-functional collaboration experience
- Lead design reviews, prototyping, and validation testing
- Mentor engineers and build strong technical capability within the team
- Lead and develop a team of 5–10 mechanical engineers
- Own the mechanical design of power electronics enclosures and inverter packaging
- Drive system-level mechanical integration of inverter platforms into multi-megawatt energy systems
- Design and optimize cooling solutions (air, liquid, hybrid)
- Define strategies for environmental protection (IP-rated enclosures, sealing)
- Collaborate cross-functionally with electrical, firmware, and manufacturing teams to ensure seamless system integration
- Guide design tradeoffs across thermal performance, structural integrity, cost, and manufacturability
- Take ownership of system performance in real-world operating conditions
