Job Summary
Manage ~10 engineers across multiple US locations, owning career growth, performance, hiring, and day-to-day team health. Contribute code, review architecture decisions, and unblock technical execution on Protego roadmap items. Partner with Product Owners to shape and prioritize the Risk Engineering roadmap while owning sprint execution and Jira hygiene. Manage stakeholder relationships across Risk Ops, Compliance, Payments, and Identity teams, and own AWS cost accountability to drive optimization aligned with sustainability goals. Champion AI-assisted engineering practices using tools like Claude Code and GitHub Copilot to increase velocity and code quality. Report to the Sr Director of Engineering with a hybrid schedule combining focused remote work and in-person collaboration at the Coppell, TX office.
Required Qualifications
- 8+ years hands-on professional experience building commercial products with Java
- 2+ years of management experience leading and mentoring engineers on distributed teams
- Bachelor's degree in Computer Science or equivalent
- Significant experience designing and building REST services and familiarity with microservice architectures
- Proven experience designing and building scalable, high-throughput, low-latency systems
- Comfortable with relational and NoSQL database design and SQL
- Knowledge of security best practices as they relate to web application development, such as OWASP
- Experience working in a cloud environment, preferably AWS, including cost management and optimization
- Experience using Agile methodologies to plan and deliver increments of functionality
- Working knowledge of core ML concepts (precision, recall, F-score, model training/evaluation) to effectively partner with our Data Science team on risk model integration
- Strong grasp of AI/LLM concepts, including agents and agentic workflows, with the ability to evaluate and lead adoption of the right AI solution for engineering problems
- Comfort working with data to identify and analyze fraud patterns, translating findings into engineering and product decisions
- Strong verbal and written communication skills, including the ability to clearly communicate technical concepts in non-technical terms
Desired Qualifications
- Master's Degree in Computer Science a plus
- Experience with UI frameworks like Angular and React
- Experience with fraud/risk systems, payments, or high-scale transactional platforms
