Job Summary
Manager, Building Maintenance at the University of Waterloo overseeing the operational management of campus building maintenance services. Responsible for the maintenance, repair, and upkeep of building envelope systems, structural components, and interior finishes across campus facilities, including carpentry, masonry, roofing, painting, locksmith, and signage. Leads supervisors and technical staff, coordinates preventative and corrective maintenance, and ensures work aligns with safety requirements, university standards, and regulatory guidelines. Drives lifecycle planning, asset management, and renewal initiatives; coordinates across multiple trades; manages maintenance planning, resource allocation, and incident response; supports budgets and procurement within university policies; champions health and safety, staff development, and compliance with the CUPE collective agreement.
Required Qualifications
- Education: College diploma in engineering technology, building systems, construction management, facilities management, or a Certificate of Apprenticeship and Certificate of Qualification in a relevant trade, or an equivalent combination of education and experience. Additional professional or facilities management designations considered an asset.
- Experience: Minimum 5–7 years of experience in facilities maintenance or construction operations, preferably within a large institutional environment.
- Knowledge/Skills: Knowledge of building infrastructure systems, construction practices, facilities maintenance operations for large institutional facilities; demonstrable leadership and team management skills; ability to plan, coordinate, and prioritize maintenance activities; financial stewardship capability; strong interpersonal and collaboration skills; knowledge of relevant legislation, codes, and safety standards; familiarity with facilities management systems and asset management practices.
- Other: Demonstrated ability to supervise trades staff, coordinate service delivery, and manage cross-trade coordination; experience in a unionized environment preferred.
