Job Summary
Malay Reviewer/Editor/Certifier needed to support the Department of Justice Linguistic Support Services. Responsibilities include translation of documents and multimedia content, transcription, and interpretation across legal, medical, financial, and technical material with terminology spanning government, court, and law-enforcement contexts. Requires ILR 4 level or equivalent, 5+ years of experience in the language, U.S. citizenship, and an active security clearance. Proficiency in English and Malay, experience with CAT tools (SDL Trados Studio), and adherence to professional ethics and confidentiality. Remote work available with occasional travel; position aligned with National Capital Region and CONUS locations. Part-time engagement.
Required Qualifications
- Minimum of five (5) years of experience accumulated within the past ten years in the required language
- Qualifying scores ILR 4 minimum or equivalent on language/translation tests
- Must have lived 3 of the last 5 years in the U.S. (does not have to be consecutive)
- Must have at least 1 year of experience working with a law enforcement and/or legal department
- Must be a U.S. citizen
- Know both English and foreign language vocabularies used in formal, legal, diplomatic, consultative, and casual modes of communication in various contexts, including colloquial slang, idiosyncratic slang, and regionalisms
- Know specialized vocabulary (and terminology) in both English and the foreign language related to the Government’s varied roles and missions
- Write in their native language fluently, but still have professional command of the non-native language
- Translate in a manner that is factually and conceptually accurate without changes, omissions, or additions
- Preserve the tone and register of source language materials
- Abide by relevant code of linguist ethics
- Proficient in using Computer-Assisted Translation (CAT) tools, with a strong emphasis on SDL Trados Studio
- Clearance: Active Public Trust or higher security clearance
- Location: Remote / National Capitol Region / Various CONUS Locations
- Travel: Some travel may be required
Desired Qualifications
- 5+ years of experience in Malay language translation/editing/reviewing
- ILR 4 minimum or equivalent on language/translation tests
- U.S. citizenship
- Experience with legal/official terminology
- Experience with translation resources and CAT tools (SDL Trados Studio)
- Proficiency in English and Malay in formal, diplomatic, and casual contexts
- Ability to translate accurately without changes, omissions, or additions
- Ability to preserve tone and register of source materials
- Confidentiality/ethics in linguistics
- Some travel required
