Job Summary
Inspect, maintain, and repair pressure reducing valves, fire hydrants, water valves, and water mains while performing valve exercising and completing Colorado 811 utility locates. Respond to water main breaks and service interruptions, flush and clean valve lines, and maintain inventory of materials and equipment. Operate hand tools, power tools, and heavy machinery including loaders, dump trucks, and excavators in confined spaces and excavation trenches. Maintain accurate work records in CityWorks, conduct site cleanup, and participate in a rotating on-call schedule to respond to emergencies within 45 minutes. Work primarily outdoors in varying weather conditions around active roadways and heavy equipment while following established safety procedures.
Required Qualifications
- High school diploma or GED
- Valid, unrestricted driver's license
- Basic knowledge of methods, materials, tools, and equipment used in utility construction and maintenance
- Ability to safely operate hand tools, power tools, and light-to-heavy equipment
- Willingness to participate in a rotating on-call schedule
- Ability to respond to after-hours emergencies within 45 minutes when required
- Zero (0) to six (6) months of related experience
- Entry-level position requiring the ability to learn water distribution maintenance practices through on-the-job training
- One (1) year of related experience
- Colorado Water Distribution Operator Level 1 Certification
- Two (2) years of related experience
- Colorado Water Distribution Operator Level 2 Certification
- Three (3) years of related experience
- Colorado Water Distribution Operator Level 3 Certification
- Four (4) years of related experience
- Colorado Water Distribution Operator Level 4 Certification
- Ability to read and interpret maps, electrical schematics, technical drawings, and use measuring instruments
- Ability to learn and apply job-related procedures through training, instruction, and observation
- Ability to follow established safety policies, procedures, and safe work practices
- Ability to participate in an on-call rotation as required
- Knowledge of Colorado municipal government operations and organizational structures
- Strong communication, interpersonal, and collaboration skills with the ability to build effective working relationships
- Proficiency with Microsoft Office (including Outlook and Teams), CityWorks, and the ability to learn new software and technology
- Strong organizational, time management, and problem-solving skills with the ability to prioritize work, manage multiple tasks, and meet deadlines
- Ability to work independently using sound judgment while contributing effectively as part of a team
- Ability to demonstrate professionalism, initiative, adaptability, and effectively work with diverse stakeholders in a complex organizational and political environment
- Regular Local/Field Based Travel
- Ability to lift, carry, push, and pull up to 50 pounds regularly and up to 80 pounds occasionally with assistance when needed
- Ability to frequently walk, stand, climb, crawl, and navigate uneven terrain, active roadways, traffic control zones, trenches, vaults, confined spaces, and other work environments
- Ability to distinguish colors, read gauges, maps, plans, and electronic displays, and hear verbal instructions, alarms, approaching traffic, equipment, and other surrounding hazards
- Candidates must successfully complete all pre-employment screenings and employment eligibility verification
- Must complete a drug test
- Must complete a background and national sex offender search
- Must complete a motor vehicle record search
- Must complete a physical demands evaluation (for some positions)
Desired Qualifications
- Current Class A Commercial Driver's License (CDL) or the ability to obtain within one (1) year of hire
- Experience in water distribution, utilities, public works, construction, sewer, or street maintenance
- Mechanical maintenance or repair experience
- Experience working safely in or around active roadways and traffic control zones
- Knowledge of confined space entry procedures, excavation safety, and trench safety
- Experience operating construction or utility maintenance equipment
