Job Summary
Maintenance Specialist in the Yakima County Solid Waste Division performs essential operating support tasks to facilitate safe, smooth daily operations across landfill, transfer station, septage lagoon, and related facilities. Responsibilities include operating and maintaining soil vapor extraction and landfill gas collection systems, irrigation and pumping systems, semi-annual maintenance on scales and wells, supporting household hazardous waste activities, identifying and handling hazardous waste per procedures, fire-safety oversight, conducting waste audits, and providing customer service and education. The role requires labor-intensive fieldwork, adherence to safety and regulatory requirements, basic troubleshooting of mechanical and grounds systems, and the ability to work in diverse outdoor conditions. Education and experience must include a high school diploma or GED plus three years of related maintenance, hazardous waste, solid waste, or water-treatment experience, plus a valid WA driver’s license; additional certifications (Forklift, HAZWOPER, etc.) obtained within one year of hire. This is a Teamsters bargaining unit position with potential for overtime and a comprehensive benefits package.
Required Qualifications
- High School or GED plus three (3) years of maintenance experience in related fields (hazardous waste, solid waste, water treatment facility, ground maintenance, welding/plumbing/irrigation installation or repair, construction)
- Valid Washington State Driver’s License and proof of insurance (if requested)
- Successful completion of general employment verification
- Within one year of hire: Certified Forklift Operator, Blood Borne Pathogen Training, Fire Extinguisher Training, Defensive Driving Certification, 40-hour HAZWOPER or equivalent training
- Hepatitis B vaccine or ability to obtain within 1 year of employment
- Respirator fit testing within 6 months of employment
