Job Summary
Maintenance/Construction Technician IV supervises technicians and performs highly skilled work to troubleshoot and maintain complex mechanical and building systems (including high pressure boilers, HVAC, plumbing, electrical, chillers, cooling towers, and incinerators) across multiple NC labs. The role interacts with subcontractors during repairs or improvements, ensures continuous lab operations, and may work in areas with biological materials and odors. Requires supervisory ability, safety training, PPE usage, and the potential to travel to satellite laboratories (Griffin in Monroe, Northwestern in Elkin, Western in Fletcher). A pesticides applicator’s license is needed within the first year, along with a valid NC driver’s license; EPA Type I–III or Universal technician certification may be required. Some roles may require CDL or USDOT medical certification and related pre-employment and regulatory compliance. The position emphasizes leadership in facility maintenance, adherence to building codes, and coordination to sustain lab operations.
Required Qualifications
- High school diploma or GED
- Two years of experience in the full range of journey-level mechanical or building trades (HVAC, plumbing, and/or electrical)
- Possess or be able to obtain within 30 days a valid NC driver’s license
- Within first year of employment, obtain a pesticides applicator’s license
- Possess, or be able to obtain, EPA certification as Type I, II, III or Universal technician as required by 40 CFR Part 82, Subpart F
- Ability to supervise maintenance technicians and coordinate contractors
- Ability to interpret building codes, blueprints, and building automation systems
- Willingness to travel monthly to satellite laboratories; some overnight travel may be required
