Job Summary
Check in and out library materials, register patrons, collect overdue fines, and assist with directional and reference inquiries at the circulation desk. Accurately enter and update patron and collection data in the library database while shelving items, reading shelves, and creating displays. Provide readers advisory, help patrons use the online catalog and digital resources, and offer hands-on assistance with computers, printing, and photocopying. Maintain and clean the audiovisual collection, manage holds and claims for returned or missing items, and support interlibrary loan tasks. Work evenings and weekends with a valid driver's license and a Texas driver's license required.
Required Qualifications
- One (1) year of public contact and/or customer service experience
- Familiarity with basic library procedures
- Demonstrated knowledge of computers
- A high school diploma or GED
- Ability to push or transport a loaded cart weighing up to 150 pounds
- Must be able to work evenings and weekends
- Maintain regular reliable attendance
Desired Qualifications
- Previous clerical or library clerical experience in a public library
- A valid Texas driver's license, the ability to obtain one within ninety (90) days of employment, or a military waiver
- An associate's degree
- Knowledge of Library policies, procedures, systems, and services including the Dewey Decimal System
- Knowledge of Bibliographic database and related search procedures
- Knowledge of Library collections (circulation, reference, and special collections)
- Knowledge of Microsoft Office Suite (Outlook, Word, Excel, PowerPoint) and Google Suite applications
- Knowledge of Effective internet search techniques and online research strategies
- Knowledge of Basic principles of customer service and public engagement within a library environment
- Skill to Accurately and efficiently operate computer and library-related software systems
- Skill to Present and apply a dedicated commitment to public service
- Skill to Adapt to changing circumstances and situations
- Skill to Maintain a positive attitude and strong work ethic
- Skill to Apply problem-solving skills to assist patrons and resolve issues effectively
- Ability to Interact with patrons and staff in a tactful, respectful, and professional manner at all times
- Ability to Exercise independent judgment and initiative while adhering to departmental policies and established procedures
- Ability to Learn and effectively utilizes computerized circulation and catalog systems
- Ability to Work collaboratively with library patrons and staff in a friendly, efficient, and service-oriented manner
- Ability to Learn, perform, and adapt to routine library functions and procedures with speed and accuracy
- Ability to Learn and properly apply established money-handling and collection procedures
- Ability to Communicate library policies, procedures, and information clearly and concisely, both verbally and in writing
- Ability to Establish and maintain cooperative working relationships with those contacted in the course of work, both internally and externally
