Job Summary
Magnet design leadership for STEP magnets: lead an integrated team of UKFE/UKAEA staff and external organisations to deliver magnet design and confidence for the STEP programme, acting as Technical Authority for magnets, coordinating cross-functional work with plasma, power & cooling, commercial, prototype & test, and project management, while developing staff, building UK supply chains, and ensuring IP management. Essential experience includes leadership in superconducting magnet development, chartered engineer status, and ability to align priorities in a rapidly evolving project, with emphasis on cross-functional collaboration, risk mitigation, and delivery against budgets and milestones. Hybrid working model with onsite requirement 3 days/week at either West Burton (Nottinghamshire) or Culham (Oxfordshire) sites; relocation allowance available; BPSS/DBS checks and potential SC clearance in future; inclusive recruitment practices and support for diversity.
Required Qualifications
- Degree or equivalent professional recognition in relevant engineering or scientific discipline
- Chartered engineer or equivalent status with a relevant professional body
- Expert and broad knowledge of magnet technology
- Substantial experience in the engineering of complex systems
- Demonstrated leadership experience in development and/delivery of superconducting magnets
