Macroinvertebrate Taxonomist

Job Summary
The Macroinvertebrate Taxonomist is responsible for laboratory sample processing, identification of aquatic macroinvertebrates, and completing aquatic macroinvertebrate field survey project work. Duties include sorting and subsampling samples, identifying macroinvertebrates using taxonomic keys, maintaining reference collections, conducting quality control, and managing laboratory equipment. The position also involves collecting macroinvertebrates from various ecosystems, measuring water quality parameters, and analyzing data related to macroinvertebrate assemblages. Required skills include strong attention to detail, effective communication, and proficiency in data management. A B.S./B.A. in a natural science and 2+ years of relevant experience are mandatory, along with the opportunity for mentorship and project assistance.
Required Qualifications
- B.S./B.A. degree in natural science field of study
- 2+ years of experience in macroinvertebrate sampling and genus or species level identification in freshwater ecosystems
Desired Qualifications
- Master's degree in Aquatic Ecology, Entomology, or Environmental Science
- 5+ years of professional experience in macroinvertebrate taxonomy and field sampling
- Certification as a Taxonomist by a recognized body (e.g., Society for Freshwater Science)
- Proficiency in identifying macroinvertebrates to the species level
- Familiarity with environmental regulations such as the Clean Water Act and experience in conducting impact assessments
- Experience with data management software and ability to interpret ecological indices
- Proficiency with Microsoft Office computer programs (i.e. Word, Excel, Outlook, etc.)
