Job Summary
Machinist operates machine shop equipment to make replacement or new parts for equipment used in the plant and to repair production equipment. Performs difficult machinist’s assembly work, using metalworking machines (lathe, shaper, milling machine, drill press, surface grinder, hydraulic press, shearing machines) to create or repair parts such as dies, jigs, fixtures, and production components. Works from blueprints or sketches, and with die makers when needed. Uses precision measuring instruments (micrometers, dial indicators, ID & OD micrometers, surface gauges, height gauges) to verify dimensions and perform shop calculations. Diagnoses trouble on production machines, dismantles equipment for repairs, and may manufacture replacement parts. Performs assembly to align parts into subassemblies and final units. Operates a lift truck and scissor lift as needed. Maintains clean work area; follows safety and procedural guidelines. Training typically from a formal apprenticeship or equivalent training and experience.
